Mother Croc Guarding Hatchlings

June 1, 2022

Yesterday's passengers got a real treat! What an amazing experience seeing this mother crocodile with up to 15 one day old hatchlings in the shallows during the tour.

When baby crocodiles hatch, they have the egg yolk in their tummy which is enough protein for about a week. But almost from day one they start hunting. Their eyes are alert to any movement and the young crocs will jump up to snatch insects from the foliage. They swim the shallows in search of shrimp and small fish.

Only around one percent of the hatchlings will survive to maturity.
